Vineyard Vistas and Wine Temptations

The Tryon foothills area has the perfect climate for growing grapes, thanks in part to its elevation and a "thermal belt" - which moderates temperatures next to the mountains year-round. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Tryon was well known for its table and wine grapes. Due to prohibition, these family businesses dried up over time. But thanks to a desire to preserve farmland and the traditions of the past, we are currently experiencing a rebirth in vineyards producing grapes for winemaking throughout the area. This area's gentle, rolling hills and clay-loam soils have proved to be an excellent spot for vinifera grapes.

More than a dozen vineyards, large and small, are scattered throughout the area. Not to be missed are our two wineries - Rockhouse Vineyards and Green Creek Winery. They are located a few miles apart and offer tours, tastings and spots to picnic. Grapes from our local vineyards are sold to wineries in other parts of the state, including Biltmore Estate in Asheville.

You can experience a vineyard up-close and personal with an overnight stay. The only B&B on a vineyard in North Carolina is right here - the Green River Vineyard Bed and Breakfast offers commanding views of their 5-acre vineyard, just one of many amenities. Overmountain Vineyards also offers a vacation cabin nestled within their 10-acre vineyard.
