JANUARY 2010

Hello,

Happy 2010! We hope you had a wonderful holiday season. The First Peak of the Blue Ridge had a rare White Christmas that really made the season festive. Below is a glimpse of our historic 1859 Polk County Courthouse as the snow got started. The mountains looked so beautiful covered with snow! Our roads were cleared quickly, as usual, but we got to enjoy the scenic snow much longer. Check out our Facebook photo album to see more scenic shots and video of a frozen waterfall.

Nina Simone Statue Dedication in Tryon on Sunday, Feb. 21
Nina Simone StatueJazz legend Nina Simone was born in Tryon, NC in the 1930s as Eunice Waymon. Projects have been underway for years to acknowledge the early life of Simone and the legacy of her music. In addition to a Historical Marker outside Simone's birthplace, fans visiting her home town will have another way to connect to the artist. The Nina Simone Project, a multi-faceted effort, will unveil and dedicate an eight-foot bronze sculpture on Simone's birthday, Feburary 21, at 3pm in downtown Tryon. We invite you to celebrate this milestone with us, or stop by the statue on your next visit to Tryon.Read Article in WNC Magazine...

Wine Experts, Wine Bars, Wine Shops, Wineries...
Wine glassesYou may already know that our area is reviving a long history of grape growing. But do you realize how much is going on related to wine? There's a lot! First and foremost, there are our two wineries outside Tryon that offer tours and tastings - Rockhouse Vineyards and Green Creek Winery. On Trade Street, Tryon's main drag, you will find Lilac Wine and Piano Bar, a lively spot for evening entertainment, light fare and wine. The Tryon Wine Society holds tastings and dinners at the 1906 Pine Crest Inn and Restaurant. The wine influence continues up the mountain in Saluda. Learn about wines by watching wine segments on our local morning show with Joni Rauschenbach, a Carolina Wine Expert who owns The Saluda Inn and Wine Cellar. The Wine Cellar features music and art events. The Saluda Wine and Cheese Market is worth a stop on Saluda's Main Street. So if you haven't explored wine at the First Peak to the fullest, get out there and check these places out. And if you have, stay tuned because there are more developments on the horizon!
