Scenic views abound as you drive to the top of White Oak Mountain and right past Shunkawauken Falls. This is a wonderful oppurtunity for people who can’t easily walk to the other waterfalls in our area. It takes about 20 minutes to drive the winding residential road to the top of the mountain. Drive safely and be sure to stay on your side of the road around the curves.

Near the top, you will come to a straight section that passes right by the beautiful waterfall. Briefly stop the car and snap a quick photo (pay attention to cars passing by) or, if you’d like, there is room for a car or two to pull over a short distance up the hill from the waterfall. It is on the left when the waterfall is on your right. Walk down the road to enjoy the beauty of the mountain views and the falls, but watch your step and please be very careful as you will be standing in the road as residents drive past. (They know to watch out for you!)

If you’d like to continue your scenic adventure, continue driving up the mountain a short distance and enjoy an overlook from the top, then continue for a few minutes further to the back side of the mountain, where you will discover the amazing mountain and valley vistas from Sunset Rock. There is a small pull over. The property is privately owned and they welcome you to stop and enjoy the views for a short while.

To return to Columbus, either retrace your steps or continue driving the the same direction and the road becomes Skyuka Mountain Road.  It has less twists and turns.  You will end at a stop sign at Skyuka Road.  Turn left to return to Hwy. 108 in Columbus, or turn right to connect with Hwy. 108 on the way to Tryon.
