The play’s book was influenced when Elvis Presley was drafted in the Army in 1957. The rock star’s name, “Conrad Birdie’ is word play on the name of country music legend Conway Twitty. Presley and Twitty were rock n’ roll rivals in the 1950s. The original Broadway production was a Tony Award-winning success. The show has become a popular production for youth due to its variable cast size and large portion of ensemble numbers.♦
