Walnut Creek Preserve Speaker Series
Jan 18-Forest Therapy
Join Dr. Mattie Decker as she discusses, “Forest Therapy – The Science and Experience of the medicine of being in the forest.”
Forest Therapy, also known as “Shinrin-yoku”, translated as “forest bathing” refers to the practice of spending time in forested areas for the purpose of enhancing health, wellness and happiness. In this presentation the science back of these practices as well as the effects of spending time in nature will be explored. We discover this as relational: it’s not just about healing people; it includes healing for the forest or river, or whatever environment we are in.
**After the presentation, those that are interested are invited to experience an introductory nature and forest therapy guided walk on the Preserve. If you want to participate in the forest experience after the talk, please wear appropriate clothing and footwear, bring a snack and plenty of water, and do not attempt if beyond your ability. Also, please be sure to bring any personal medication that you may require in the event of an emergency.
Dr. Mattie Decker is a certified guide with the international Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT) as well as the NOLS Wilderness Medicine and Wilderness First Aid. She will be offering on-going walks at the Preserve throughout the Winter and Spring. This session will provide understanding and an overview for those interested in experiencing the full 2 1/2 hour guided walks. She is author of Hidasta: The Art and Science of Slowing Down to Live Fully, https://www.hidasta.com/.
