ARTICLE: Springtime at the First Peak of the Blue Ridge One of the great joys of being in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains is the beauty of Spring. If you’re weary from being stuck inside during the cold winter months – we have the remedy for you.  Immerse yourself in the natural beauty here in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  The weather is welcoming. It invites you to relax and breathe a little deeper, taking in the sweet mountain air and the promise of warmer days. Our elevation variances ensure that we have the first spring flowers in the region and that we have an extended season.  We start early with the inspiring glimpses of spring… puffy pink cherry blossoms and cheerful daffodils pop out in mid to late February.  Larger splashes of color decorate the rural scenery as the bright yellow of forsythia and large pink blooms of the saucer Magnolias bloom in March. April greets us with a rainbow of blooms– look up for pink and white Dogwood trees, a mix of colors and shapes from ornamental and native Azalea shrubs. This an optimal time to watch for birds. Then look down along the forest floor for the white blooms of Bloodroot and varieties of Trillium – large displays are found in our sheltered natural areas. April also brings the first sight of green on the bare branches and leads us into full canopies of green leaves by the end of the month. Walks in the Woods

Walks are scheduled mid-March through mid November, weather permitting, join Saluda Community Land Trust members to explore local favorite walks in the Saluda area. Walks generally last about an hour and a half, and besides showcasing our local treasures, encourage getting folks outside. Walkers meet at the parking lot of the Saluda Library at 2pm. A SCLT member will keep you aware of the terrain of the trail and share their insights about the history, flora, and fauna of the area as they lead each walk. April 6: Lazy Girl is an easy one mile walk that takes about an hour. The trail traverses a stream and connects Esseola Drive through the woods to Laurel Drive in Saluda. No pets on this walk. April 20: Walk and egg hunt to celebrate Easter. Henry’s Nature Center is wooded terrain and a moderate two mile walk that transverses an old home site and the new Pavilion. May 4: Walk at Adawehi Stewardship Forest in Columbus, to celebrate the spring ephemerals and learn about the ecosystem of a wetland and stream side habitat. Easy. May 18: A new Henderson County park offers walking trails in the tranquil forests of the Green River Gorge. An observation deck is next to a rushing waterfall. 1.8 miles. Moderate. June 1: Old Home Place #1 is an easy to moderate walk giving walkers a glimpse of life in the 19th century. See an old homestead, fields, streams, and water cascades. June 15: Little Hungry is a moderate hike on a trail that is rarely visited, along a stream through fields and woods. July 6: Historic Saluda....
