Established in the winter of 1889, The Lanier Library is the oldest institution in Polk County and one of only sixteen membership libraries in the United States. From its humble beginnings as a ladies’ book lending club, the Library moved into its own building, on the corner of Chestnut Street and Melrose Avenue in Tryon, in 1906 and was named for the renowned American poet and Tryon resident, Sidney Lanier. The Library has been extended several times to include additional rooms for reading and research but retains it’s charming arts and crafts character. It is also the home of the Sidney Lanier Award annual poetry competition and provides regular programs of local cultural interest that are free of charge and open to all. Visitors are always welcomed. For more information, visit our web site.
