PODCAST: Tryon’s Nina Simone: The High Priestess of Soul

You’ve heard Nina Simone’s music before. You might not know her by name, but chances are you’ve hummed along to some of her memorable melodies.

After a long career, Nina Simone would be recognized worldwide as an artist and activist, transcending genres and generations. But first, she had to start out as a little girl with a big talent born in the small mountain town of Tryon, North Carolina in 1933, Nina was a child prodigy who began playing piano at the age of 3.  Her young talent would be nurtured, allowing her to develop the skill and values to carry her music to a worldwide audience.

In celebration of Nina Simone, the First Peak and the Town of Tryon created these six podcasts and invite you to listen and learn more about the stories and the events of Nina’s childhood that contributed to the creation of a legend. Then come visit Tryon, N.C. to walk in her footsteps and to see the ways we are honoring her today.
